Bird Watching

Borneo is home to an estimated 690 species of bird, 60 of which are endemic meaning that they can only be found in Borneo.

Let's be honest, it's harder to find the birds in Sarawak as they are not as confined to small pockets of area that unfortunately happens in Sabah but part of the thrill is to 'hunt' (with binoculars and cameras only of course). It's a lot more satisfying and enjoying when you've worked hard to listen, search, find and enjoy the birds.

Because of it's elevation and location, Long Semadoh is lucky enough to have birds which fall into the 'Lowland and submontane' category as well as 'montane' birds which can be found at 900 meters and above. It is also home to a few birds that can only be found in the Sarawak highlands, the main 2 being the Dulit Frogmouth and the Black napped Oriole; found on an adjacent mountain Paya Maga.

Other very rare and sought after birds include; Bulwer's Pheasant, Borneo Peacock-Pheasant, Roul Roul, Crested Fireback, Dulit Frogmouth and more.

Birding trips are customised to your requirements so please email us at ruwanlodge@gmail.com. We highly recommend a minimum of 3 nights.

By early 2025 we will have 3 bird hides/blinds to get maximum sightings of the elusive and skittish ground birds.
